A Book of Origami Designs With Magical Effects

Description (more info)

A collaborative effort by the r/d100 community. The original post can be found here:

I introduced it to my campaign as a reward for an adventure in a Demiplane of Paper, the premise being a powerful witch either created or collected these designs in books that have a limited set of enchanted papers keyed to their respective designs, giving the GM some latitude about how many figures their players could create. More complex designs would require practice and might even have a chance of failing. My suggestion is that some books can only be attempted after they successfully create x number of simpler origami figures. I roughly placed the books with more powerful diagrams closer to the end of the list. Alternatively, you could have your players discover a box with a semi-random assortment of already completed origami figures.

Ornithology Origami: A book of birds and their uses (d20)

d20 Result

1

Parakeet: Despite being brightly green, once activated the parakeet attempts to be inconspicuous. The user can teach it a short message which it will repeat at a trigger determined by the user. In all respects it behaves as the spell Magic Mouth except its duration is 2 hours.

2

Blue Bird: The user can speak a message of up to 140 characters. Upon completion of the message, the blue bird multiplies into a flock and scatters delivering the message to every sentient creature in a 10 mile radius. If it is in a settlement, can be adjusted to convey a message only within the limits of the settlement.

3

Pigeon: The pigeon hops to the ground, bobbing its head, appearing alert. It can be taught a message of any length. The folder identifies a recipient by name and the pigeon will then find a way to deliver that message, no matter where the receiver is. It is nearly impossible to intercept. The form of the received message can be written or audible.

4

Owl: The folder is granted darkvision out to 120 ft and a temporary boon of +2 to their wisdom score until the next sunrise, upon which the owl disintegrates.

5

Ostrich: While this ostrich might not be much to look at, it reminds you that sometimes cowardice really is the best option. When folded, once per long rest, upon making a successful stealth check to hide, the folder gains the effect of the spell Sanctuary.

6

Cardinal: This beautiful red bird reminds you of a song you heard once, if only you could remember it. Grants advantage on performance checks involving music.

7

Peacock: Gods, are you looking beautiful today or what? Advantage on Charisma checks, disadvantage on Wisdom checks and saving throws lasting until the paper is destroyed or discarded.

8

Canary: The delicate bird figure before you appears as if it could be destroyed by the slightest misfortune. If an ally within 30 feet would normally gain the poisoned condition, the canary disintegrates, preventing the poisoned condition, and also emitting a high-pitched shriek audible for 120 feet.

9

Toucan: You're sure you followed the instructions correctly, but is the bill really supposed to be this long? Any weapon you wield may be given the reach property as a bonus action, regardless of its normal status. If the weapon already has reach, the distance is lengthened by 5 feet. This feature may not be used again until after 1d4 long rests.

10

Chicken: It shreds its sides to sprout what look like feathers. It has three effects: 1) if brandished at foes it CROWS very loud, giving the effect of a shatter spell in a 30ft cone. 2) if thrown at foes, it BAWKS, forcing everyone in a 20ft radius to make a DC12 CHA save or attack it. Spellcasters who are concentrating have disadvantage on the save because suddenly there's a goddamn chicken in front of them. 3) if thrown straight down, it TRANSFORMS into a chicken dinner, feeding eight people and reducing their level of exhaustion by one.

11

Swan: This is, without a doubt, the ugliest folded paper you've ever seen. That said, you feel a strange attachment... Make a DC 12 wisdom OR intelligence saving throw (player's choice). On a failed save, you destroy the swan. On a successful save, and after waiting 1d4 days, you are granted the ability to cast a DC 12 Charm Person spell at 5th level once per long rest for 1d4 days. After this time, the swan appears quite beautiful to any creature of sufficient taste, but has no magical effect.

12

Pelican: The paper pelican flies into the distance and by the time it flies back it is full sized. It opens its prodigious beak, revealing a hiding spot for a single object. It then flies away and can be recalled by folding the pelican again.

13

Crow: This origami gives its user incredible intelligence for a short amount of time. For the period this buff is active, a paper crow keeps flying around the user head and works as a familiar. For d4 hours, the user have a +2 intelligence bonus.

14

Harpy Eagle: This giant origami needs 3 hours to be completed. When finally folded, it gains life and can be used as a flying mount for 1d6 days. It can carry 1 medium humanoid or 2 small. It doesn't have any uses in combat.

15

Mallard: a duck folded from waxy paper. This complicated paper craft is a favorite among thieves guilds! The mallard is hollow and can be used to unsuspectingly transport goods and information over large bodies of water. There are stories of families using these paper birds to ferry babies away from those that wish to harm them.

16

Bald Eagle: This simple design folds flatly, somewhat less flashy then other examples, but when the folder crushes it in her hand, her vision feels sharper and sensitive. The range of her sight is doubled, effectively gaining low light vision. In addition, ranged attacks using bows and crossbows gain +2 on attack rolls. Effects last 4 hours.

17

Dove: The dove takes off and flies away while a rainbow breaks across the sky. If set off during combat, all combatants abruptly cease, losing all motivation to continue fighting. Non-players either drop their weapons or departs. Even, outside combat, the dove causes hostilities to ease. The effect operates in every respect as Mass Suggestion, except that the compulsion to be non-violent if mandatory for the duration of its effect (including the player characters).

18

Hawk: The hawk belligerently screeches and takes to the air. It flies erratically and dive bombs randomly at any creatures in its vicinity, dealing 1d4 damage at a dex fail of 19. For 5 minutes it proceeds to attack every person in a 50 ft radius of its activation. For every successful attack, it causes the creature to attack every other creature (with natural weapons only) creating a battle royale scenario. Could be a cause for an epic tavern brawl.

19

Crane: A red-crowned crane has a calming effect and emanates a certain regality when it sits upon the palm of the owner. Upon activation time slows for the user and it dawns on them that they might make a limited wish (as per limited wish spell with 80 percent chance of success). The holder is also keenly aware that it can banish the incorporeal undead, and might be compelled to do so. If the limited wish spell fails, the holder still gets a +4 morale bonus on saves and attack rolls for the next 4 turns.

20

Stork: The folder feels a sense of calm and peace as they finish the final fold. Nothing immediately appears to happen but momentarily an actual stork approaches, descending to the party. As it nears it carefully drops a bundle before or directly in the arms of the folder, never settling its feet on the ground. Your party now has a baby. Well, fuck.

The Cynologique Catalogue: The Book of Good Doggy Origami (d6)

d6 Result

1

Corgi: The origami grows in size to a regular Welsh Corgi. It scampers around nimbly. In combat encounters with creatures of Giant subtype, the party gains a +4 Dodge bonus to AC as it distractingly harasses the opponent while avoiding all damages itself. Outside combat, it is strangely attuned to stonework, especially of Dwarven handiwork. It will help the folder make perception checks on stonework by pointing out inconsistencies or special features, either actively or passively (+2/+4 for stonework of the Dwarven variety). Does not stack with bonuses granted by Dwarven racial features, such as stone cunning. The corgi will remain a companion for 9 hours before shrinking back to size. Can be reused 2 more times.

2

Basset Hound: The origami figure grows in size to a regular basset hound, with droopy ears flapping as it moves. The basset hound moves sluggishly, but assists in survival or investigation checks (gaining +2) though perhaps not at an optimum speed. Once its task is complete, the basset hound flops on its belly and shrinks back in size. Can be reused 2 more times.

3

Pointer dog: The origami figure grows in size to a regular pointer dog. The folder states a creature and the pointer will point its nose in the direction of the closest creature of that type in the vicinity. If the folder knows that a particular creature or person has been in the area that the pointer dog is activated, it can point in the direction of where that specific creature is currently located. The pointer will remain a companion for 9 hours before shrinking back to size. Can be reused 2 more times.

4

Bulldog: The origami figure grows in size to a regular bulldog. The dog lazily plops to the floor and proceeds to nap. The dog improves the reception of the party. Other intelligent creatures must make a will/wisdom save of 18. If they fail, the attitude of the creature towards the party improves by one level—hostile creatures become indifferent, indifferent creatures become friendly. Usable once.

5

Beagle: like it’s real life counter part, the Beagle fold has exceptional senses that can be a great boon to its owner. Before sleeping, the small paper dog should be placed within 5 feet of its owner. Until the owner awakens, the dog will be constantly vigilant, looking for anything that might mean to harm its master within a 40ft radius. Due to its magical construction, the dog can “smell” magical items as well. The dog shares the same perception score as its owner, and possesses dark vision regardless of its owner. When danger is sensed, the beagle will emit a long howl to make up its master.

6

St. Bernard: The origami figure grows in size to a regular basset hound, St. Bernard, complete with a signature barrel around its neck. While outside combat it appears lethargic, in combat it springs to actions, rushing to aid fallen allies and ignoring difficult terrain. By sharing the elixir in its barrel, the St. Bernard revives unconscious allies, restoring 1d8 hp (once per creature). It drags away dying allies or allies in peril due environmental effects (such as lava, or falling rocks) and then proceeds to protect them with its body until they stand, capable of absorbing 18 points of damage. The figure can be re-used for 3 combat encounters.

Origami Book of Dragonlings (d6)

d6 Result

1

Red Dragon: The red dragon grows into the size of the hand, whipping its head and tail, snapping and nibbling at the folder's fingers harmlessly. The Red Dragon then leaps and searches the room, drawn to any treasure, regardless of how well hidden. The Red Dragon deftly avoids any effects of traps protecting the treasure, effectively neutralizing them. Once it accesses the treasure, it combusts and is reduced to a tiny handful of ashes. If there's no treasure of note in the room, it sits on the shoulder of the folder for 10 hours until it detects treasure in the environment.

2

Green Dragon: The green Dragon grows into the size of the hand of the folder and regally steps off in front of any book presented to it. The folder can ask three questions of the dragon. The book opens as if under the effects of thaumaturgy, pages quickly flipping in succession. The process takes 10 seconds per 100 pages, upon completion the dragon collapses into 1-3 sheafs of paper with a precis summarizing the content of the book and the answers with citations to the questions if they exist in the book.

3

Blue Dragon: The Blue Dragon grows into the size of the hand of the holder and immediately takes flight. It zeros in on any illusion and jealously blasts it with a tiny cone of blue light. Any minor illusion is banished. Major illusions fail or flicker momentarily, revealing whatever is occluded before it is restored.

4

White Dragon: The white dragon grows in size of the hand of the folder. It despises heat and its aura negates heat effects. In extreme hot weather, its effects are commensurate to Communal Endure Elements. Indoors, it keeps rooms pleasantly chill. Lasts 5 days.

5

Black Dragon: The black dragon grows in size to a hand. It hangs on the shoulder of the folder and casts a cone of shadow that pools on surfaces and allows allies to step through into the Shadow realm effectively mimicking the Shadow Step spell with a range of 1 mile. Lasts 5 days.

6

Dragon Egg: A multifaceted oval resembling a fabergé egg. When the egg hatches it produces a permanent version of an origami dragonling. Roll a d6 to determine which. 1-5 produces a red, green, blue, black or white respectively, while 6 produces a duck.

Mythic Origami (d4)

d4 Result

1

Sphinx: Once placed on a path or doorway grows to life-size and refuses to allow anyone to pass unless an appropriate answer to a riddle is supplied. Will defend itself but will not attack first. Refer to bestiary for stats. Cannot be activated during combat.

2

Minotaur: The minotaur grows in size to a ornery minotaur complete with a wicked axe. Placed on a path, it will unerringly lead a party to a possible destination of their choosing attacking any creature in its path unless the folder has the foresight to order it to halt, and uncannily triggering traps while avoiding its effects. For instance, in a labyrinth or maze it can either lead the party to the location of its most valuable treasure or the exit. In a settlement, it can lead the party to the best type of a requested establishment.

3

Phoenix: The mythic bird unfurls its wings majestically and circles in the air near the folder. In the presence of an expired ally or npc, it settles on its torso and embraces before erupting dramatically, and completely consuming the body in flames, reducing itself and the body to ashes. The ashes shift to reveal a naked humanoid in its place, the previous person restored to life as if by the Reincarnate spell, its race randomly determined by this D100 by Ramiro Murga.

4

Hippocampus: The regal hybrid creature expands to about the height of the folder, suspended in air mysteriously. It fixes its equine head to look mesmerizingly at the folder, the folds on its neck flutter like gills while it’s fishtail whips beneath it as if keeping it in place. After a period of time depending on the severity of the following effects, the hippocampus wavers and disappears. The folder is granted perfect recollection of any memory they have experienced. Further any memory modification or compulsion is immediately and permanently reversed. Finally the folder is granted True Seeing, gaining immunity from illusion effects and other magical methods of concealment. The perfect recollection and true seeing lasts for 2 weeks before fading.

Entomology Origami: Insects, Arthropods, Arachnids and Other Too-Many-Legged Things (d8)

d8 Result

1

Butterfly: A swarm of butterflies flutter from the folder's hand before swirling lackadaisically around them. The folder can direct the swarm to move 20 feet per round for a minute. In combat opponents 5 feet in the vicinity of the butterfly swarm must make a wisdom saving roll (16) or are fascinated for 1d4 turns (2d4 for fey creatures, including gnomes).

2

Scorpion: Upon activation, the user sprouts a scorpion tail that could deal 1d10 damage (+6 to attack, 15 feet reach) and imparts the poison effects of fire ink (sickened, however creatures with fire resistance are immune). The falls off either at the conclusion of combat or 3 successful hits

3

Wasp: Known by papyromancers from all over the world as one of the most dangerous crafts to fold. The folder must place a drop of poison onto the thin, cottony sheet and wait for 1hr. Next the folder must make a DC 12 DEX check to correctly fold the insect and a corresponding FORT save to avoid poisoning themselves. Failing the DEX check results in nothing more than a crumpled ball of poison laden paper. If successful, the wasp will target and attempt to sting one creature of the folder’s choosing.

4

Snail: The folder may throw the snail at an opponent and (if struck) victim will suffer the effects of a slow spell.

5

Fly: To fold the fly it takes double the amount of a regular origami, due to it's minimal size. When folded, the origami "defolds" itself and multiplies for 1d100 amounts. Then it magically folds itself again and fly away. Magically interesting, not that useful.

6

Spider: When folded, this small spider walks inside the user through it's mouth, nose or ears. Once inside, it's magic gives the user Spider's Climb for the day.

7

Dragonfly: The dragonfly expands to a size of a melon. It hovers in the air appearing daintily. But when the folder gestures at an object it finds a way to grip it delicately with its legs and lifts it in the air. The dragonfly will deliver the object (up to 25 lb) to any location that the folder is familiar with up to 7 miles. Upon delivery, the dragonfly reverts to a non-magical origami shape

8

Praying Mantis: The Praying Mantis looks particularly pious with its front legs raised before it thorax. Once it is activated, every party member that is associated with a deity finds their connection to their divinity to be much clearer and more focused. Divine casters gain a +2 on rolls associated with divinity and on tasks related to their deity. May also work with certain non-clerical faiths associated with nature. Effects last 24 hours

The Paper Bouquet: Surprising Effects of Horticultural Origami (d4)

d4 Result

1

Calla Lily: This slender origami structure is surprisingly realistic, absent of sharp folds and favoring gentle slopes. When visibly worn on the body of the folder, the person gains an aura of innocence. Lawful pursuers ignore the wearer, leaving the area if there are no other persons it recognizes. If interrogated, the wearer’s words appear truthful, even under the effects of a magical compulsion such as zone of truth, but only if a deception would incriminate the wearer. Other deceptions might be recognized by a perceptive interrogator. While the enchantment is powerful, it ends after 5 minutes and the calla lily wilts.

2

Rose: Folded with care and precision, this delicate pattern is most effective when constructed with a special gold-leafed stationary. The rose is enamoring, and when gifted, it functions as the charm person spell on the intended target. The target should make a DC13 appraise check. If successful, the target realizes how much time and care went into the flower’s construction, and the charm person effects last for double the original time.

3

Tulip: The tulip magically convinces others of its value. When the tulip appears, the first people to see it must make a DC10 Insight check. Those who fail are convinced that the tulip is worth 1gp. Each time a new individual or group encounters the tulip, they must all make another DC10 Insight check. If they fail, they are convinced the tulip doubles the value from the previous individual or group fooled by the tulip. Lasts 1 day.

4

Lotus: After folding the lotus one can eat it to remove any debuff or curse or one can set it upon the water where it will grow large enough so the one who set it down can sit inside. When one sits within the lotus shall close and the person shall be resurrected as a Protector Aasimar and the lotus will sink into the water.

Felix, the spiteful alley cat: A tale for wicked children (d6)

d6 Result

1

Black Cat: After folding the figure jumps out of your hand and turn into a black cat only visible to you. Through out the day the cat will follow you and inflict bad luck upon those who wish you harm or simply dislike you. It does this by knocking things off onto the person, tripping them, scratching a hole in their bags, etc. The cat disappears after 13 days unless one does a familiar ritual upon it to make it your new permanent familiar. If you do it is now a visible normal black cat that has the power to turn one enemy roll into a natural 1 once a day.

2

Rabbit: After crushing the figure in the their fist, the folder gains the effects of the Haste spell, increasing their speed by 30 feet, gaining a +1 bonus on attack rolls a +1 dodge bonus to AC and a +1 to dex or reflex saves. Effects last 5 minutes.

3

Chameleon: whichever character folds the Chameleon is affected by the Invisibility spell.

4

Mouse: When the folder places the mouse on the floor in a room, this cute origami mouse scurries to the nearest wall and makes a circuit around the perimeter. If you watch it closely, the mouse pauses at any secret mechanism, whether a secret door, hidden safes or traps. The folder knows what the mechanism is, and will have advantage on skill checks involving interacting with it. Or they might convey that information to another person who adds +5 to skill checks

5

Pig: depending on the paper used to craft the pig, this paper swine can be attuned to certain schools of magic. It will hunt for that particular magical aura tirelessly, like its real life, truffle hunting counterpart.

6

Skunk: When activated an overpowering oder extends out to a 20ft radius, nauseating any creature not holding its breath and utterly crippling creatures with an elevated sense of smell.

Personal Effects: Origami on and about the body (d10)

d10 Result

1

Mustache: has the unique ability to appear like a normal mustache to everyone including the wearer.

2

Fangs: A relatively simple design looks comically like a pair of lips with two triangular teeth peeking from the upper portion. The user slaps the fangs over their own mouth and for the next two rounds they double their speed, gain the effects of blur and heal themselves 1/10th of any damage they deal, with a minimum of 1 hp.

3

Head: after the folding is finished, the head instantly collapses and disappears. The user will then hear good advice for the next 2 hours.

4

Heart: The folder has their constitution increased by 1 if they eat it or they can give it to someone they love to give a life ward to said person that stays active till used.

5

Cup: can dispense infinite beer. Lasts 1 hour.

6

Bowl: can be heated to create a nutritious, but papery meal that recovers all your HP and one third of your spells. Can be used 10 times before disappearing.

7

Key: Can unlock any door with a keyhole using this key. Can be used 1d4 times before ripping on the lock.

8

Sword: The sword transform to a sharp blade with a metallic sheen. Can cut through organic matter easily, but will break if hit with another metallic weapon or destructive damage. Has 3d6 + 5 base damage.

9

Book: the folder can decide on a topic they want to learn more of. The book will contain 100 pages of relevant information on the topic. Cannot tell the future.

10

Crown: When worn, the structure transform into a permanent silver crown, granting a enhancement bonus to Charisma of +3.

The Bard’s Chest (d2)

d2 Result

1

Violin: The violin floats and adjust its size according to the desire of the user. In most respects it behaves like the Exquisite Accompaniment spell, floating beside the user and responding to their intentions. In addition, any players of any class gains +4 on skill checks related to performances like oratory, dance or singing.

2

Saxophone: The golden curvy instrument invites you to blow it. Once you do, a cascade of notes, physically manifested, spills from its body, much like the Solid Note spell but en masse. The notes appear to be musical notation in tangible form but generally conforms in quality to the intention of the user. They can be placed anywhere, even in mid-air and it will remain in place resisting any force against it. However, it will fail and disappear at a successful strength check of 10 + 2x Charisma Modifier of the user.

Down-Low and Up-High: Shrubs and Vines (d4)

d4 Result

1

Origami Grapes: When placed on the ground, grows vines on any nearby structures. These vines can be climbed by medium and smaller creatures.

2

Origami Strawberry: When folded, acts similarly to the goodberry spell.

3

Origami 3 Leaf Ivy Leaf: Does 3d10 structural damage to an adjacent structure with plant growing out of it and pulling it down.

4

Origami Thorn Stem Branch: Creates dense thorn bushes in a circle around the folder which last for 24 hours or until the folded branch is burned.

Finger Puppets & Fun Figurines!! (d8)

d8 Result

1

Finger Puppet Soldier: When worn, this simple finger puppet encases the wearer in a paper armour, granting 4d4 temporary hit points.

2

Finger Puppet King: The paper of this puppet folds out into a cape when placed on one's finger. The cape is fragile, and will break if any damage is taken by its wearer, but grants insight to its wearer (+10 bonus to history, arcana, and religion).

3

Finger Puppet Wight: This ghastly origami puppet will act like the Animate Dead spell if placed on a corpse's finger. On skeletons, flecks of paper can be seen moving their joints.

4

Finger Puppet Goblin: The paper will tear if placed on a finger too large. If worn by a creature smaller than medium size, the puppet crawls towards their head and folds out into goblin ears. The creature gains the nimble escape feature for 1d6 hours, after which the paper ears disintegrate.

5

Finger Puppet Giant: This puppet is about 1 foot in height, but is still made to be worn on a finger. The creature who wears it has paper encase their body up to double their size. They are effectively under the Enlarge/Reduce spell for 5 minutes, after which the paper disintegrates

6

Finger Puppet Beholder: This puppet takes a significant amount of skill to fold. When it is complete, the wearer can aim the eyes at their enemies. Doing so unleashes the Prismatic Spray spell and consumes the origami.

7

Genie Lamp: The paper lamp can be rubbed to release a Paper Genie that can make 3 minor wishes come true. After using those wishes, both the Genie and the lamp disappear.

8

Fortune Teller: Despite its name, this origami fold does not tell your fortune. Instead it tells you a random thought that the target has had within the last few minutes. The thought appears in writing under the flap that is lifted. One can increase the chance of getting a thought pertaining to a specific subject if they ask the target about it first.

Oceanic Origami (d12)

d12 Result

1

Seahorse: Deploying the seahorse origami figure causes the folder to sprout a disturbing exoskeleton over their armor and clothes, segmented to provide incredible ease of movement. The folder gains a natural armor bonus of +5 to their AC. In addition, in combat if a folder does not take a move action on their turn, they gain concealment, the exoskeleton camouflaging with its immediate environment, making attacks on the folder take a 20% chance of missing. The effects only last one encounter with the armor sloughing off abruptly, but strangely the portion covering the head remains in place, creating a unique helmet item, possibly fusing with any headgear the folder is wearing prior.

2

Turtle: The folder has their lifespan increased by 150 years.

3

Whale: This relatively simple origami design belies a powerful enchantment. If activated in an open space or open water, the whale grows in size to gargantuan proportions. The whale holds its mouth open for a minute. In that time a willing person or persons can enter the yawning wet cavern and disappear into a pocket dimension. The whale then crumples back into a ball. In that dimension the person finds a yacht beached inside a cavern that could be the inside of some creature and can serve as a surprisingly comfortable domicile, with a magically stocked mini-fridge. The person can retire in this pocket dimension for as long as they please, but when they hope to exit, they are deposited in a location of the DM's choosing. Perfect for the adventurer needing to take a break to work on their novel (or when a DM needs to account for a player dropping out of the game for a period of time).

4

Walrus: The Walrus grows in size, gaining anthropomorphic features and clothing, including monoculars, a top hat, a vest and a bushy mustache. Once it is grown to full size, three Eggmen, named Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, materialize and immediately attack the party. While their bodies and heads are bizarrely a single giant egg, they are dressed, and armed, dashingly like bravos, brandishing masterwork rapiers and flintlocks. They shout insults like "Your hair wants cutting." or "You know very well you’re not real." They attack anyone between themselves and the Walrus, something the Walrus takes advantage of by putting himself between the party and the eggmen without quite escaping or defending himself—though he does have naturally thick hide. If the adventurers manage to defeat the dextrous Eggmen, they spill coin and gems upon death like a split piñata (roll 5d100 to determine the GP value in total per eggmen). If the Walrus survives he rewards the players with a purse of iridescent pearls of various hues, among them 3 pearls of power and promptly disappears. If the party does not vanquish all the eggmen after 3d6 rounds of combat, the walrus and the surviving Eggmen disappear, leaving none of their coin, gems, pearls or weapons. You get the impression that the Walrus wasn't a pleasant fellow.

5

Orca The orca increases in size to a normal sized orca. The orca violently erupts bursting open by the force of six hulking armed paper orcs. If summoned in the midst of a battle, the orcs join the party and immediately take a round against the folder’s opponents. If summoned outside combat, the brigade of five paper orcs are domineered into a single rank by one orc warchief, stomping around mouthing vigorously like a drill sergeant. Via the warchief, the orcs can be ordered to do tasks much like an Unseen Servant, but in addition they undertake more complex tasks related to building encampments—gathering and harvesting build materials, constructing defensive structures and guard towers, digging trenches and latrines. In 4 hours, 6 orcs can build defensive structures like chevals-de-frise and a guard tower, in 8 they can build a perimeter and a siege weapon which they can man, in 12 the orcs can produce a well constructed defensible war-camp. The tasks can be completed in half the time by summoning another orca. Regardless of what tasks they perform, the orcs are exhausted and cease functioning after 36 hours.

6

Narwhal: Initially, the narwhal does nothing. Over 2d6 long rests, however, one of the user's arms becomes increasingly calcified and pointed resembling a narwhal tusk. After this transformation, the arm may be used as a magical finesse melee weapon dealing 2d6 piercing damage, but any task normally requiring two hands is at disadvantage. If the origami is lost, discarded, or destroyed, the arm returns to normal over 1d4 days.

7

Starfish: Once an enemy has made a melee attack and damage has been dealt, as a reaction you may make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw. On a successful save, you instead take no damage and choose to either lose a hand or a foot. On a failed save, you take half damage and randomly lose a hand or foot. Losing a hand grants disadvantage on tasks requiring two hands (including two handed attack rolls), while losing a foot halves your speed. This appendage grows back after 1d4 days, at which point the origami starfish loses an appendage. This feature may then be used again up to a total of 5 times before the magic is expended.

8

Goldfish: How did this fish get in your hand? You may choose to make a DC 12 Wisdom save. On a failed save, you can't remember anything that happened longer than 10 minutes ago until your next long rest. On a successful save, you may choose a target to make a DC 12 Wisdom save. On a failed save, the target is Charmed and can't remember anything that occurred in the last 10 minutes. Doing this consumes the goldfish.

9

Babelfish: By putting this small fish near your ear, you may understand the literal meaning of any spoken language of the material plane. This does not allow you to speak or read any other language.

10

Penguin: While not the fastest runners, penguins excel in the water. Using an action, the player may half their movement speed to double their swim speed. However, this does not grant water breathing. This effect lasts indefinitely until dispelled or the player uses an action to end the effect. This recharges on a long rest.

11

Polar Bear: The origami figure is a head of a polar bear and when placed over the face of the folder, they change into a polar bear. The effects corresponds to the spell Polymorph, except the effects last 15 minutes.

12

Boat: Upon creation, the boat expands into a rowboat that seats four. The boat can be used for the next three hours, as after that it becomes soggy and unusable.

Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometric Origami (d10)

d10 Result

1

D4 Dice: The origami structure flattens conveniently allowing the adventurer to tuck it on their person. To activate the die they bring it to their mouth and exhale into a opening on one edge, which can be done in a free action. This pointy die allows the player to add 1d4 damage to a successful hit.

2

D6 Dice: This dice can be inflated in a free action, allowing the folder to add d6 to any of their attack roll or skill checks.

3

Star: It glows bright light in a 60 ft radius but does not blind your allies even if they have light sensitivity. Can be thrown as a ranged attack and on a hit it explodes and does 4d12 radiant damage in a 5ft radius.

4

Big Hole In A Little Card: The classic "cut a hole in an index card large enough to step through" trick (which involves a little folding) results in a hole which opens to a place you can effectively teleport to (as the spell).

5

Box: When the box is folded a (cr appropriate) monstrosity, undead, aberation, ooze, and fiend jump out and attack the folder and their allies. Once the enemies are defeated the box explodes and a Planetar appears. In thanks for releasing the Planetar it will offer a butterfly pendant that can be used to summon the Planetar once to aid the heroes in time of need. It then flies off to do good for its god.

6

Plane: The paper plane grows large enough to sit 6 medium sized people within it. Once inside the person who folded the plane may speak the name of a plane and the plane will fly to the desired plane.

7

Pyramid: Set it down and a pyramid with a 60-foot‐square base bursts upward. Inside is a sarcophagus containing a mummy lord. The pyramid is treated as the mummy lord's lair, and its sarcophagus contains treasure of the GM's choice. Once the treasure is removed the pyramid turns into a blank sheet of papyrus.

8

Hypercube: This fold is particularly difficult, as one of the final steps expands 8 identical cubes from inner part of the fold into the 4th dimension. The end result looks like a cube, but invisibly carries 8 times the weight and surface area. Gives the folder's weapons the "Ghost touch" weapon enhancement" for 8 attacks before crumpling.

9

Impossible Cube: this very hard origami takes 3d6 minus your Intelligence modifier hours to make, as it defies the laws of geometry. When it's completed, though, it quickly grows, multiplying it's impossible edges everywhere, and corrupting all it touches. Will eventually stop, after devastating a big area. After the expansion, the paper collapses, leaving a bunch of distorted and impossible insanity-destroying shapes behind. The corruption can only be undone by a Wish.

10

Tessaract Crane: Only foldable by true masters of origami, requiring 1000 folds on a giant piece of paper resulting in a crane of which our 3 dimensional eyes can only perceive an itty bitty crane. When the final fold is finished, part of the paper extends an infinitesimal amount into the Astral, Etheral, Certainty, Possibility, Positve material AND Negative material planes, tapping into the fundamental forces of the universe. Before crumpling (but still retaining its crane shape as a keepsake of such a monumental fold), the world becomes as real to the folder as a dream who is given the ability to make a wish (as the spell, XP cost must be paid).
