A tool helps you to do something you couldn't otherwise do, such as craft or repair an item, forge a document, or pick a lock. This list is meant to be used as a reference for other tables on this blog and to serve as a resource for players and DM’s

Additional examples might include pottery, scrimshawing, rope making or arrow fletching. Your tool or kit proficiency can mechanically benefit your character in game if your training is related in any way to the situation. If you find humanoid tracks and you are proficient in cobbler's tools you might be able to identify what kind of shoes they were wearing and maybe their height weight or gender (Based on the footwear style) without rolling where another character would need a survival check.
